The Golden Gate

The Golden Gate is the most famous monument of the 11th century in Kyiv city. It was built at the request of one of the greatest princes of Ancient Rus’ Yaroslav the Wise. This Gates served not only a defensive function, but were also the main attraction at that time. All eminent guests, ambassadors and merchants came to the City through them. Now in the three-tier pavilion is a museum, in the central part of which you may find fragments of the real ancient walls of the gate.

Khreshchatyk str. & Maidan Nezalezhnosti

To feel and taste the true spirit of Kyiv city you should definitely visit Khreschatyk Street and Maidan Nezalezhnosti square. Khreschatyk is the most famous and one of the busiest streets of Kyiv city. It is a wide boulevard 1.3 km long with plenty of chestnut trees, cosy restaurants and fashion boutiques. The Independence Square, or Maidan Nezalezhnosti, is the central square of Kyiv, the main and the most beautiful one. Parades, concerts, festivals and other city events and holidays take place on here. It contains six fountains, Independence Column and artificial waterfall.

National Opera of Ukraine

The Kyiv Opera group was formally established in the summer of 1867, and is the third oldest theatre in Ukraine, after Odessa Opera and Lviv Opera. The existing building of the National Opera of Ukraine was built in 1901 in the style of the French Neo-Renaissance and continues to be one of the most famous opera and ballet centers in Europe.

St. Sophia's Cathedral

Saint Sophia’s Cathedral is Kiev’s oldest surviving church and has architecture and ornamentation dating back to the 1000s. It is an outstanding architectural monument of Kyivan Rus and one of the city's best known landmarks. Built in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise it was named after St. Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople. It was used until the 13th century as the main church of Kyiv Rus and a burial place of the Kyivan rulers. This magnificent construction is included to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

St. Volodymyr's Cathedral

The Cathedral was built from 1862-1882 in a so called Russian pseudo-Byzantine style. The frescos inside were made by famous Russian, Ukrainian and Polish artists, such as Vasnetsov, Nesterov, Vrubel, Pymonenko and Svedomsky. The church belongs to the Ukrainian Orthodox denomination.
